India, a country with around quarter million internet users now wants net neutrality. While this concept seems to be new for many Indian internet consumers but it is going to affect every one of them. It is like saying don’t be racist to the data. Every data available on the internet should be treated the same way. You cannot create filters of your choice on the data of your choice. That is not done. Airtel recently came up with a separate plan for VOIP calls. But they had to pull that after being criticized by many netizens. Flipkart recently pulled out of Airtel Zero plan and issued and official statement supporting net neutrality.
The ISPs are thinking about more ways to earn money or in some cases recover their losses. Apps like WhatsApp have almost put an end to the SMS culture which has resulted in losses to the internet service providers. Most of the people in India don’t SMS now, they just WhatsApp. You can’t blame them also as texting through WhatsApp is free and you can send unlimited texts.
I think there should be a middle ground in this where everyone is happy.
